Balboa at the Golden Lion
All Jazzed Up - Celebrating 25 years
21-23 March 2025
We have been teaching and organizing events for over 25 years! Please come and help us celebrate in the delightful Golden Lion Ballroom, Northallerton, North Yorkshire from 21-23 March 2025, in the company of the inimitable Shani Brown from California.
Shani learned her Balboa directly from those dancers we refer to as “Old Timers” – Willie Desatoff and Maxie Dorf to name but two. She will be bringing her amazing knowledge, skill and relaxed teaching style to lessons over the weekend and as always, the emphasis will be on social dancing with plenty of personal attention.
There will be a welcome dance on the Friday evening, a Balboa Ball on the Saturday and an extended Tea Dance on the Sunday. We are very fortunate to have two of our favourite DJs providing the music – Mel Calanglang and Gillian Scott.
Shani will be available for prive lessons during the day on the Friday.
All Balboa dancers are welcome. There will be no level testing as groups will be split by size, not experience.
This more relaxed format makes for a better learning experience whilst allowing more time to chill, catch up with friends and visit the local area. The lovely towns of Thirsk (James Herriot), Richmond (Castle), Boroughbridge (Roman remains), Rippon (Cathedral) and Darlington (Railway Museum) along with Mount Grace Priory, Kiplin Hall and Byland and Fountains Abbeys are all within striking distance. And let’s not forget the Dales and the North York Moors.
The cost of tuition and social dances is £120/head. There will also be one or two surprizes, which we will have to keep secret - otherwise they wouldn’t be surprizes!

The price of £120/head is for tuition and social dances only. This does not include accommodation/meals as we wanted to keep the costs down to offer plenty of flexibility in this regard. However, there are a limited number of rooms available at the Golden Lion Hotel (whose ballroom we are using) and we have negotiated a preferential price.

There are many other places to stay in Northallerton within a walking distance of the venue: -
The Porch House, Allerton Court Hotel and Katch. There is a Premier Inn in the nearby town of Thirsk and plenty of other B&B options.
If you can’t make it for the whole weekend, you are welcome to join us just for the evening dances.

There is plenty of parking at the Golden Lion Ballroom and Northallerton Railway Station with a direct line from London, Kings Cross is about a half a mile away. The train journey from Kings Cross to Northallerton takes just under 3 hours.
Our Approach
Is about having fun, moving naturally in a way that is comfortable to you and enjoying what you are doing.
We incorporate a method developed by Gloria Pinares, a movement therapist, dancer and instructor in Barcelona, which uses all of these things to great effect.

About Us
Hello, I'm Jean (on the left) and Shirley is on the right. We have been teaching all styles of swing dance for more years than you have had hot dinners (yes, we do look young for our age!). We are training with Gloria Garcia Pinares in Barcelona and use her pioneering method in our classes and workshops.
